You Mean I Can Write About THAT?

A Poetry Reading, with Workshop

Let’s admit it: one of the best reasons for going to a poetry reading is to get ideas for our own poems! As serious poets, we celebrate all poems, but we also want to write our own. What can we do when we feel as though we have run out of ideas? Where can we turn?

Suzanne Cleary will read a selection of her poems, introducing each as a prompt for your own poems. Then, group members will share their own ideas for poetry subjects, in an interactive and encouraging exchange of ideas and writing tips. There will be time to begin writing a poem, and to share it with the group. (Spoiler Alert: Poetic subjects are all around you. The trick is recognising them.)

ABOUT SUZANNE:

Suzanne Cleary is an international member of the Kent and Sussex Poetry Society who lives and writes near New York City. Her most recent books are Crude Angel (2018) and Beauty Mark (2013), both from BkMk Press. Her awards include the Cecil Hemley Memorial Award of the Poetry Society of America, the 2017 Troubadour International Poetry Prize (2^nd Place), and the 2017 Gregory O’Donoghue Prize of the Munster Literature Centre (3^rd Place).  Her poems have appeared in anthologies including The Best American Poetry and in journals including Poetry, Atlantic Monthly, Poetry International, Poetry London, Agenda, and The Moth (as one of four finalists for the 2020 Moth Poetry Prize). She teaches as Core Faculty in the MFA in Creative Writing Program of Converse College.
